What is Feng Shui?
Feng Shui (pronounced Fung Shway)–which literally translates to “wind and water” is the ancient Chinese art and science of spatial arrangement. It is a complex body of knowledge that reveals how to balance the energies of any given space to assure health and good fortune for people inhabiting it. The goal is to enhance the flow of Ch’i (life force or spiritual energy) and to create harmonious environments that support health, signal wealth and invite happiness. At its most basic level, Feng Shui is a design system based on the belief that our surroundings affect us.

All things in our environment are made of energy. Energy can either have a positive or negative effect on the people who inhabit that space. The main goal of Feng Shui is to balance Ch’i so that it does not move too fast, too slow, but remains at a steady speed.

Feng Shui is not a religion, meditation or New Age Cult. Ivy Ellerby practices a western form of Feng Shui called the Black Hat Sect Feng Shui which was developed by Grand Master Lin Yun. He incorporated spiritual practices from around the world and was the first to focus on how one’s intentions can impact the physical environment and energize the nine specific areas of each home. Grand Master Lin Yun introduced this Western form of Feng Shui to the United States in the 1970s. Whether you buy into Feng Shui’s philosophies or not, many of its principles simply make good design sense.
